Mossi Traoré: Fashion too

Conceived in close collaboration with the artist, the exhibition invites visitors into a universe where fashion engages in dialogue with popular cultures, urban arts and traditional craftsmanship.

 

Sculptural silhouettes, videos, and textiles interact with the museum’s archives and artisanal gestures, shaping a journey that is both sensory and participatory. Visitors are invited to touch, listen, create, and feel. Trained as much in the street as alongside the great couturiers, Mossi Traoré cultivates an aesthetic that is pared-down and committed.

Ferdinandea, l’île éphémère

Between the end of June and the middle of July 1831, underwater volcanic activity gave rise to a new Mediterranean island in the strait of Sicily across from Tunisia.

 

Its many names remain recorded in European archives, “Ferdinandea” for the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies in honour of their Bourbon king, Ferdinand II, “Julia” for the French, in reference to the July Monarchy, and “Graham” for the British, after Sir James Graham, First Lord of the Admiralty. Still resting today a few metres below the surface, its dormant remains are closely monitored by seismologists. Could renewed volcanic activity cause it to rise again, and once more provoke geopolitical manœuvres that testify to imperial logics of extraction and exclusion?

For over four thousand years, motherhood has been central to tales, rites and images that shape the course of societies. Drawing from Mediterranean cultural sources, the exhibition Good Mothers explores motherhood as an intimate experience, social construct, political matter and artistic theme.

Popular ? Treasures from the Mucem collections

As the Mucem celebrates its tenth anniversary this year, it’s an ideal opportunity to take a look back at the heart and history of the museum: its collection. This permanent exhibition presents the collection in all its diversity. It brings together the historical holdings of the Musée national des arts et traditions populaires, the European collections of the Musée de l’Homme and those acquired since the early 2000s in a bid to open up to the Mediterranean and the contemporary world.

Mucem is the only social museum whose scientific project is entirely devoted to the cultures of the Mediterranean, so to mark its 10th anniversary, it is inviting us to discover the wealth of its European and Mediterranean collections through a new permanent exhibition. From Greco-Latin antiquity to the present day, via the colonial period, this exhibition immerses us in the history of the plural and fantasised ‘Mediterraneas’.
