« Êtes-vous triste ? » — Sophie Calle

From April 12 to September 21, 2025

Curator : Clément Nouet

The exhibition Êtes-vous triste? devoted to Sophie Calle at Mrac Occitanie borrows its title from a question posed by the artist at the end of the text La Visite médicale.

Through her work, Sophie Calle continues to tell us her stories in a precise and sober language, with an eye for the right word. Sometimes light and funny, sometimes serious, dramatic or cruel, these true stories, each accompanied by an image, deliver fragments of a life in a work in progress.

Sophie Calle’s work has been presented for over forty years in the form of installations, photographs, videos and stories. The exhibition Êtes-vous triste? is an opportunity to rediscover some of her iconic works, notably the ensemble of Douleur exquise (1984-2003), based on the artist’s experience of a romantic break-up as the most painful moment of his life.

A human life contains enough emotions, strong or ordinary, to be a material for art in its own right: such is the principle at the heart of Sophie Calle’s artistic production, who, since the end of the 70s, has been transforming her experiences and intimacy into works of art.

In this exhibition, the artist has chosen to explore some of her central themes, such as the deprivation of the gaze and disappearance, using archives and writing as sources and raw materials for her creation.

Taking up the challenge of the invitation, the artist questions with wit and depth the critical reception of her work and her concern to pass it on to future generations.
