[mac] musée d’art contemporain

Endeavors and masterpieces. Pictures at an exhibition

From April 26, 2024 to September 08, 2024

Curated by Jean-Marc Huitorel

On the initiative of Frac Sud, curator and art critic Jean-Marc Huitorel has designed an exhibition at three leading cultural institutions in the South of France and the city of Marseille: Frac Sud, Mucem and [mac].

The exhibition presented at [mac] brings together works characterized by a twofold questioning of the sport itself and, at the same time, of the chosen medium, painting (and, more broadly, the forms of the picture) and the regimes of representation it implements. The exhibition brings together most of the angles, questions, motifs and themes raised at both Frac Sud and Mucem: victory and defeat, trophies and relics, obedience to rules and transgression, liberation and alienation, probity and cheating, domination and contestation, racism, colonialism, minority rights, feminism, jubilation, denunciation, and so on. Many of these paintings, in fact, are double-edged and, behind their calm appearances, assert critical, political positions, in the image of a notable part of today’s art.

This exhibition is part of the Cultural Olympiad and has been awarded the Paris 2024 label as part of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Parade: the collection and its guests – permanent collection

Permanent exhibition

The [mac] collection brings together works from artistic movements from the 1960s to the present day.

The collection includes paintings, sculptures, photographs, films and installations. Its presentation, revisited according to the temporary exhibitions, allows visitors to make the link between the different exhibitions during guided tours.
In its new architectural setting, the [mac] collection is celebrated under the title PARADE. In keeping with its undeniably festive character, PARADE showcases the masterpieces of the collection, while at the same time sparing no effort to surprise visitors with original proposals, the result of a considerable program of restoration work on the municipal collections, accompanied by major deposits and loans from the Centre Pompidou, the Centre National des Arts Plastiques, the Centre international de recherche sur le verre et les arts plastiques, the Fonds Régional d’Art Contemporain Provence-Alpes-Côte-d’Azur and invitations to a number of young artists discovered. e.s in Marseille, who are now pursuing successful international careers.
