Le Verre, l’Académie des savoir-faire

A discussion on the Académie des savoir-faire « Le Verre »

Led by Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance, with academicians Frédéric Armandon, Marion Flament, Alice Lebourg and Nicolas Verschaeve

At the Grand Plateau, Friday, August 26 from 3 to 4 pm

On the occasion of Art-o-rama, the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès is exhibiting at the Cirva the research conducted during the Académie des savoir-faire workshop dedicated to glass.

In 2021, at the conclusion of a semester of public conferences and masterclasses, the 22 engineers, craftspeople and designers of the fifth Académie des savoir-faire directed by the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès, joined together at Cirva for a final workshop.

Under the pedagogical supervision of designer Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance, the selected “academicians”, divided into five groups, had the purpose of working with an industrial glass – that of an emblematic bottle from the city of Marseille – according to a traditional recycling process.

From August 25 to 27, 2022, their creations, between the discovery of unexpected glass properties and winks of Marseilles, are presented on the very site of their experimentation, thus inaugurating the opening of the Art-o-rama fair to design, and celebrating the international year of glass instituted by the United Nations.

The Académie des savoir-faire

Every two years since 2014, the Académie des savoir-faire has been inviting craftsmen, designers and engineers to explore paths of innovation in the fields of craft skills. This exploration, which took place over nine months during the first three editions, will now take place over a period of eleven months, from January to November.

With the Académie, the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès is implementing a work schedule on skills with a prospective dimension. It will enable participants to enrich their knowledge by attending a series of conferences and masterclasses led by experts, and then to exchange and improve their skills by taking part in a workshop, a real laboratory for new practices. The intention is to combine transmission with exploration.

The Académie des savoir-faire is representative of the Foundation’s vocation: to support craftsmen, designers and solidarity actors who invent new skills to transform today’s world and build tomorrow’s. By choosing to strengthen the role of the Academy among its major programmes, the Foundation is reaffirming its commitment to exchanges between the fields of design and crafts. It intends to increase the number of experiments based on collective intelligence as well as the consideration of issues related to sustainable development.

Dedicated to glass and crystal, the fifth edition of the Académie des savoir-faire is placed under the pedagogical supervision of designer Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance. Succeeding Matali Crasset (“Textiles”, 2019), Jean-François Dingjian and Eloi Chafaï from Normal Studio (“Metal”, 2017), Guillaume Bardet (“Earth”, 2015) and Patrick Jouin (“Wood”, 2014).

Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance

Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance is a French designer whose work explores a broad range of disciplines and materials, defined by a narrative deeply rooted in the natural world. Born in southern France in 1974, he followed in his father’s footsteps, with an academic training in sculpture at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Appliqués et des Métiers d’Art, followed by a design diploma at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs. Drawing on this richly creative background, Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance approaches design with a particular sensibility that shapes projects ranging from architecture to furniture, interior design to bespoke limited-edition collections. His sculptural work expresses his respect for past heritage, combined with simplicity of line and an authentic commitment to make pieces that will last. He has created furniture and objects for houses such as Saint-Louis, Hermès, Ligne Roset, Cinna, Ceccotti Collezioni and Baccarat. Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance has also worked with the Manufacture de Sèvres and France’s Mobilier National.

Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance’s approach to design celebrates the marriage of heritage, fine materials, industrial design and the applied arts. His expertise has been endorsed and rewarded with prizes including the NeoCon Silver 2016 (for his Modern Family collection for Bernhardt Design), the 2015 Label Via, the 2014 Prix Janus du Commerce (for the Air France lounges), the 2012 GQ Award for Best Designer, the prestigious Red Dot Design Award in 2011, the Elle Deco International Design Award and the Wallpaper Design Award in 2009.
