f a projects opened in 2001. The gallery is situated in an old warehouse in Bankside, just round the corner from the Tate Modern. It represents emerging and established contemporary artists from the UK and abroad working in all media. The scale of the building allows the gallery to undertake ambitious installations of their artists’ work, as seen in recent exhibitions by James Ireland and Grazia Toderi. In 2005, f a projects opened Chung King Project in Chinatown, Los Angeles. This gallery is a collaboration with Friedrich Loock, Wohnmaschine, Berlin and Mihai Nicodim, Kontainer Gallery, Los Angeles.
James Ireland’s sculptures reference and subvert the language of landscape and nature, and combine them with the conventions of minimalist sculpture. Through the subtlest of gestures, Ireland is able to evoke experiences of nature – a sunrise or sunset, a waterfall or mountain range. Yet he frames these elements using steel grids or ellipses to dictate his viewers’ experiences.
Through few elements, Ireland (born in 1977) creates works that appear delicate and fragile, composed of balanced elements, but are actually rigidly constructed, anchored to the ground without seeming so. Ireland will present one new sculpture specifically produced for Art-O-Rama 2008 : a wall-based modular piece as well as a freestanding and suspended ellipse and a large collage.
