For Art-o-rama 2023 Cable Depot proposes a one-artist installation-performance booth by Daniel Nicolaevsky Maria, with both editions and unique works for sale.
Multi-media artist, Daniel Nicolaevsky Maria situates his work between conceptual art and performance. He uses bedsteads, walls, digital art and his body as subjects and supports for his research, in a practice that explores the notions of circulation, attachment, belonging and memory. Daniel Nicolaevsky Maria sets up plural devices aimed at questioning a complex history in which representations of the black, queer and marginalized body are often limiting.
He is a current recipient of a one-year residency at Fondation Fiminco in Paris, where he is making new work specifically for Art-o-rama. Titled Berceau du Monde (“Cradle of Life”), the total concept for the booth is based on performance within an installation comprised of paintings executed on found bed frames. The human scale bed frames are suspended and entangled inside the booth using ropes – referencing his visceral 2019 performance 4 (a) ch/cords at Galerie du Jour, Agnès B. The unique artworks used in the installation are supported by editions which the artist has been producing at the Fiminco print studio in tandem with his unique works and which will provide an affordable entry point for some collectors. The artist has also been producing and selling a growing series of ‘clocks’ made using wound ropes, continuing the reference to his performative work.
Daniel Nicolaevsky Maria’s practice is already strongly connected to Marseille. In 2020 he was the youngest resident of the experimental multidisciplinary program White Mountain College (WMC) at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Marseille. His ongoing series of clock began at this residency and the gallery is looking forward to coming full circle with them back to Marseille four years later. Earlier this year, Daniel Nicolaevsky Maria performed at Cable Depot’s booth at Art-O-Rama 2022 as part of our solo presentation of Charlie Warde’s Playtime. Several of his collectors, some of whom were already and Art-o-rama and some who travelled especially, came to see him dance. Cable Depot is looking forward to welcoming them at its booth in 2023 with his own, new work on show.
