Le Grand bain ou comment bien se (dé)vêtir au soleil 1940 – 2000

From June 28, 2024 to January 05, 2025

For a long time an elitist leisure activity, the sea was democratized with the expansion of transport links, the introduction of paid vacations in 1936 and the development of water sports. Today, it attracts millions of bathers who come to sacrifice themselves to the rite of the beach, the scene of the latest “beachwear” trends.

From the unisex, functional leotards of the 1930s to the “couture”, sometimes offbeat creations of contemporary designers, the “Le grand bain” exhibition traces the evolution of social mores and tastes through the history of swimwear – or how to (un)dress well in the sun!

The exhibition has been awarded the “Cultural Olympiad” label, a program set up by the International Olympic Committee to enable the host country to promote a dialogue between sport and culture throughout its territory, before the Games and right up to their conclusion.

Collection permanente du Musée Borély

Until December 31, 2024

Discover the world of decorative arts and fashion in an 18th-century bastide listed as a historic monument.

Dedicated to the decorative arts, the museum presents a selection of 2,500 works in the Château Borély: furniture, ceramics, glass, tapestries, objets d’art, rare exotic objects, design and fashion collections, from the 18th century to the present day. Visitors will discover works displayed in “periods rooms” and thematic rooms: superb collections of 18th-century earthenware (from the Marseilles and Moustiers factories, among others) and 19th-century ceramics (important collection of Théodore Deck ceramics,) large decorative ensembles by painter Louis Chaix, leather hangings, panoramic wallpaper by the famous Zuber factory, suites of painted canvases by Philippe Rey.

The “fashion” department allows visitors to admire the creations of Madeleine Vionnet, Pierre Balmain, Christian Dior, Yves Saint-Laurent, Elisabeth de Senneville, etc., as well as those of contemporary designers. Presentations are regularly renewed.
