The first was born in 1941 at Galerie Braun in Paris, with the exhibition Vingt jeunes peintres de tradition française. In the midst of the Occupation, getting together, exhibiting together, exalting the French tradition, signified an act of revolt and the hope of a renaissance. To illustrate this movement, Jean Bazaine, Charles Lapicque, Alfred Manessier, Jean Le Moal, Jean Bertholle and Maurice Estève. These artists bear witness to the revival of French painting and symbolize the rise to power, under the banner of the Nouvelle École de Paris, of non-figuration, which largely dominated this immediate post-war period until the 1960s.
