Shared passions – From Basquiat to Edith Piaf, The Lambert Collection at the Mucem

April 17 to September 23, 2024

Group show

Curated by Marie-Charlotte Calafat and Stéphane Ibars

An unprecedented dialogue between the Lambert collection, in particular those donated to the French State, and the Mucem collections.

The exhibition follows Yvon Lambert’s career, starting with his connection to Provençal and Mediterranean cultures, then focusing on a number of themes around which the two collections dialogue: the popular and the everyday, man and nature, poetry and literature, intimacy and existence.

Endeavours and Masterpieces. Trophies and relics

April 26 to September 8, 2024

Group show

Curated by Jean-Marc Huitoral and Jean-Fabien Philippy

At Mucem – Musée des Civilisations de l’Europe et de la Méditerranée, “Trophées et reliques” (Trophies and relics) shows that sport, like art, is rooted in a number of beliefs, most of them very ancient, which combine learned and vernacular forms (learned in their own time), and that their experience is inseparable from a set of artifacts whose effectiveness is largely based on the faith placed in them. Art thus finds itself at the crossroads between the adoration of relics and the fetishism attached to contemporary objects, whether they belong to stars or to obscure people whom we wish to distinguish in this way. Art, like sport, produces mythology.

Naturist Paradises

July 3 to December 9, 2024

Curated by Bernard Andrieu, Jean-Pierre Blanc, Amélie Lavin, David Lorenté

Today, there’s a new craze for nudity in nature, a craze that goes hand in hand with the quest for healthy, vegetarian diets, natural therapies, meditation and outdoor yoga. These lifestyles, as well as the rejection of diktats weighing down on our bodies, are all keys to understanding the issues at stake in the naturism of yesterday and today.

Popular ? Treasures from the Mucem collections

December 13 2023 to December 31 2026

As the Mucem celebrates its tenth anniversary this year, it’s an ideal opportunity to take a look back at the heart and history of the museum: its collection. This permanent exhibition presents the collection in all its diversity. It brings together the historical holdings of the Musée national des arts et traditions populaires, the European collections of the Musée de l’Homme and those acquired since the early 2000s in a bid to open up to the Mediterranean and the contemporary world.

Mediterranean – Chapter 1: Inventions and representations

June 5 to December 31 2026

Curated by Marie-Charlotte Calafat, Justine Bohbote, Raphaël Bories, Camille Faucourt, Enguerrand Lascols and Hélia Paukner

Mucem is the only social museum whose scientific project is entirely devoted to the cultures of the Mediterranean, so to mark its 10th anniversary, it is inviting us to discover the wealth of its European and Mediterranean collections through a new permanent exhibition. From Greco-Latin antiquity to the present day, via the colonial period, this exhibition immerses us in the history of the plural and fantasised ‘Mediterraneas’.
