Fondation Vincent Van Gogh Arles

Sous les pavés, la terre

By Sigmar Polke

Curation : Bice Curiger, assisted by Margaux Bonopera

From the 1st March to October 26th, 2025

Starting in March 2025, the Vincent van Gogh Foundation in Arles will present a major exhibition dedicated to one of the great artists of our time, Sigmar Polke (1941-2010), featuring paintings, photographs, sculptures, prints, and films. It will highlight the complexity of the artist’s work, tinged with unexpected and wild humor, marked by a love of experimentation, and always supported by a keen observation of the world and committed stances.

The encounter between Van Gogh and Polke at the Vincent van Gogh Foundation in Arles reveals unexpected yet tangible links, particularly through the motif of the potato. For Vincent, this tuber symbolizes the connection to the nourishing earth, the labor of farmers, and the meals of the poor, while for Sigmar, the potato symbolizes the “unglamorous” everyday life of post-war Germany, in contrast to the colorful American pop art that glorifies the new world of consumerism. As different as Van Gogh and Polke may seem, they share a positive temperament, imbued with a deep humanism, as well as a desire to escape the norms of mainstream art.
