City Galerie Wien & Shore Gallery, Vienna - Dialogue
Bonny Poon & Malte Zander
For Art-o-rama City Galerie Wien and Shore Gallery propose a dialogue between the artists Bonny Poon and Malte Zander.
Both artists, each in their own way, conceptually deal with visual references of contemporary culture. Through creating elaborate narratives in their exhibitions, they both contextualize current streams in the world and in art to then create new systems for themselves.
For Marseille, they revisit topics and artworks of previous exhibitions together. Bonny Poon’s show Off the Wall (2022) was conceived around the topic of being an art dealer. A maze made of fair booths, a gallerists’ psychedelic nightmare, was built out of wood and paper to carry the words ARTIST – DEALER – USER – LOVER – PET. These words defined Poon’s personal life in the background of running a gallery in Paris. Pieces of these paper walls are reworked, framed and then placed back into their natural habitat, the fair booth.
Poons revisited Words relates to the print-paintings of the life-sized Actors from Malte Zander’s show Best Friends (2022). His use of analogue and computer-generated images allows different approaches to content and technique in his work. Through overlays and repetition, the layers of references play with each other, fall apart and crystallize into new meanings.
Zander’s painterly updated characters in combination with Poon’s conceptual framework will result in an exhibition with the fair booth being part of the concept.
The architecture of the booth are reminiscent of the idea of the maze. The cut-out words and re-painted characters find, through their new-found relationship and exchange, new connotations and conjunctions at Art-o-rama.
