Dawid Radziszewski, Warsaw

For ART-O-RAMA 2017, Dawid Radziszewski gallery wants to confront the work of Marian Szpakowski (1926-1983) with the works by two present-day female artists – Katarzyna Przezwańska and Agata Bogacka. They not only explore the works of contemporary artists, but also the topics from the history of Polish art. They are interested in how the artworks – separated by half of a century – reflect each other, with striking visual resemblance.

Marian Szpakowski explored the relations between spatial geometry and the illusion of the third dimension in geometrical abstraction. His early work Composition XXI announces the whole series of the “flying coffins” – as his contemporaries ironically dubbed them. The works of Agata Bogacka, one of the most prominent Polish artists born in the 70s, balance the boundaries of geometry and figuration. Only the physical distance from the painting and the viewers’ imagination determine which side they take. In her practice, Katarzyna Przezwańska also uses a particular vocabulary of the geometrical sculpture. Her sculptures are created from natural materials like eggshells, feathers, or minerals. Using the strategy of mimicry, the artist forces one creation of nature to imitate the other. Feathers and shells start to resemble a face, multiplied eggshells form an architectural structure or a modernist sculpture.

The selection of the works for the booth serves as a starting point for a reflection on the ways geometrical figures transcend each other in different dimensions – and the ways they transcend time and space.
