Marie & Mathieu Jouve, Julian Schnabel
Château La Coste is delighted to present, as part of Art-O-Rama 2026, the recent works of Marie and Mathieu Jouve (M.M. Jouve), ceramicists and creators of artistic furniture based in Aix-en-Provence.
In their studio nestled in the heart of Provence, Marie and Mathieu Jouve form a creative duo where ceramics engage in dialogue with design. Building on the expertise of Jacqueline and Georges Jouve — Mathieu’s grandparents, leading figures in 20th-century ceramics — they uphold a tradition of excellence whilst breathing new life into it.
Building on this family aesthetic, they are reinventing sculptural ceramics in which everyday objects are elevated to new heights. Their work, both understated and timeless, explores an organic and refined language, fuelled by a constant focus on technique and material. Marie and Mathieu Jouve combine traditional techniques and the art of firing with innovative materials. Full forms and clean lines meet deep, enveloping glazes that naturally invite the touch.
The M.M. Jouve workshop is not merely a place of remembrance: it is a living laboratory where a personal signature finds expression. Their practice strikes a subtle balance between the legacy of handed-down craftsmanship and the drive of a playful and resolutely contemporary creativity.
The works presented by the M.M. Jouve studio draw their essence from the contemplation of Mediterranean nature. Flora and fauna become a recurring formal vocabulary, inspiring ceramics that pay homage to the delicate balance between structure and reverie, between light and shadow.
Black and white emerge as a graphic language in which clean lines and raw instinct bring each piece to life. This tension between modern rigour and organic sensuality lends the collection a unique presence. For Art-ORama, this presentation forms a true theatrical staging: a theatre of shapes and symbols where geometry engages in dialogue with nature. Within this dynamic, a selection of publications produced by Éditions du Château La Coste
will be presented in dialogue with the works of Marie and Mathieu Jouve.
