François Bret Prize from the Beaux-Arts de Marseille – INSEAMM
Art & Design
Painter François Bret was the man who, when appointed director of the Beaux-Arts de Marseille, convinced the local authorities to build the Luminy school. Committed to reforming the teaching of art and architecture, he was, for example, among the first to give photography a place in an art school, inviting Lucien Clergue among others. He introduced “support-surfaces” painters to Luminy, and taught César. It was under his leadership that the Marseille School of Fine Arts entered a new era. In 1976, young Marseille artists were exhibited at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. To name the Prix des Beaux-Arts de Marseille after François Bret is not to look to the past, but to draw on a strong history to better face the future.
The Prix François Bret des Beaux-Arts de Marseille is awarded each year by a jury of professionals to two young graduates of the school, one in art and one in design, who will benefit from a focus at the Art-o-rama show and support from the members of the jury.
The École des Beaux-Arts de Marseille would like to thank François Bret’s family for agreeing to donate his name to this award and for helping to organize it.
