Commanderie de Peyrassol

L’art de ne pas être vorace

Temporary exhibition

From April 1st to November 2, 2025

Jonathas de Andrade

An exhibition organized as part of the Brazil-France 2025 Season

For the first time in 2025, the Commanderie de Peyrassol is offering a cultural season. Echoing the desire for a “multi-disciplinary, innovative and committed” season, and the attachment to Brazil of Philippe Austruy – owner of the site and collector of contemporary art – artist Jonathas de Andrade was invited to design an exhibition at the heart of this vast wine estate in the South of France. Inaugurating a new space, the exhibition “L’art de ne pas être vorace” proposes a reading of Jonathas de Andrade’s work through his approach to nature and territories, revealing all the poetic force that runs through his practice. Presented in an uncluttered atmosphere, a selection of works, some previously unseen and others shown for the first time in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region, echo the reflections and contemporary issues defined as the thematic axes of the Brazil-France 2025 season, notably climate and ecological transition. Between violence and love, hope and melancholy, trust and fear, threat and promise, the cohabitation of kingdoms is the subject of an exhibition designed for a place where the environment is at the heart of the discussion.

New hangings in the permanent collection

This year, the Commanderie de Peyrassol is pleased to present two thematic displays, inaugurating a new 200 m2 space dedicated to the permanent collection. The display in the main building, created in 2016, articulates a selection of paintings and sculptures whose logic is based more on visual strategies than on a narrative or story to be told. Among other subjects emblematic of art since the 1960s, interest in science, the inclusion of the viewer in the artistic device or the positioning of the work of art as an autonomous and independent object, are at the heart of this itinerary. The second building, originally dedicated to temporary exhibitions, brings together artists who are directly involved with history, underground culture, socio-political conflicts or the violence of the world. The discovery of this space allows us to apprehend the expression of the artists’ positions. An adjoining mezzanine pays tribute to Arman, the emblematic figure of the New Realism movement so dear to Philippe Austruy, on the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the artist’s death. The guided tour of these spaces allows visitors to (re)discover a broad spectrum of twentieth- and twenty-first-century art, and to grasp the ever-recurrent attempt by artists to broaden their artistic forms.
