Founded in 1987 by the artist and essayist Emès-Manuel de Matos, Atelier Vis à-Vis is a publishing house specialising in multiple artworks on paper. In 35 years, more than 250 original multiple works, prints and artists’ books have been produced in its silkscreen and typography art studio. Defining itself as a research laboratory in the field of visual arts, Atelier Vis-à-Vis aspires to develop and promote contemporary interdisciplinary art through its production and residencies programs. Real collaborations, these creation cycles mix the heritage techniques and theoretical reflections, and takes the form of a dialogue between the artist and the editor.
This year, Atelier Vis-à-Vis has invited 5 artists in residence and presents a selection of its latest editions produced with Marine Pagès, Marilou Chagnaud, Jennifer Hugot, Tomek Jarolim and Nicolas Giraud around a common notion: the existence of the printed image and multiple art.
Jennifer Hugot questions “printing” as a process of reproduction or a psychic trace left by a sensation, disorienting our perception of the very nature of the print. Echoing this, it is the pixel that Tomek Jarolim proposes to extract from the digital image, whose temporality of 120 images per second is fixed durably by pressure of the inked surface on the paper.
At the same time, Nicolas Giraud will pursue a reflection on the mechanisms of construction of the multiple art and the narratives it generates. Taking the form of an artist’s book and several art prints, the visual conversations of Marine Pagès and Marilou Chagnaud, from her research programme “regards croisés”, will also be presented.
