Sofa poems (live)
Sergio Verastegui
Performance, Place de la Cartonnerie, Thursday, August 25, 7pm
A sofa as a sculptural entity, a ghostly image of someone potentially sitting, maybe there, maybe not there, a form of environment music or the construction of an atmosphere, a mental space, a poem, a text that is constructed late at night, with the shadows and lights that cross the windows, a volume in a domestic space, a presence with weight; the mathematical problem of how to move it in a narrow space, the question of dwelling and encumbrance, a sculpture, but also a block of moss in the mind.
The sofa poems project, currently exhibited at 3bisf in Aix-en-Provence until August 28, has given rise to a parallel exhibition, an artist’s book and a vinyl album with original compositions, pieces of a hypnotic sound form, a soft and dense furniture music. The live version of the album is a free and improvised declination from the same sound material: enveloping synthesizer layers and ambiances.
The album is available for listening and downloading in digital format on this link.
Sergio Verastegui
Born in 1981 in Lima, lives and works in Paris. Sergio Verastegui develops a work of writing of the fragment from sculptural forms, in a superposition of layers of meaning and materials. With a strong material presence but also insisting on the conceptual rigor, his works have to be considered as pieces of realities extracted from a torn world. From the fortuitous meeting between diverse objects emerge situations of fragility, between narrative tension and poetry, traces and accidents. Sergio Verastegui studied at the Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage, Rio de Janeiro and then at the Villa Arson, Nice.
He has recently exhibited at the French Institute (Madrid), CAPC (Bordeaux); Dienstgebäude (Zurich), MAMCO (Geneva), Meetfactory (Prague), Casa Imelda (México). He is a laureate in 2019 of the Étant Donnés program of the French Institute and the FACE Foundation, in partnership with the Professional Committee of Art Galleries. His works can be found in the collections of CAPC, Centre National des Arts Plastiques, MAMCO, FRAC Bretagne, FRAC Île-de-France and FRAC-Artothèque Nouvelle Aquitaine. He is preparing for 2023 a solo show at the Crisis Gallery (Lima). His exhibition sofa poems is currently on view at the Centre d’Art 3bisf in Aix-en-Provence, until August 28.
