The affair between architect Le Corbusier and American dancer Josephine Baker on a 1929 cruise inspires Gerard & Kelly’s new film. The artists infuse the modernist perfection of the Cité Radieuse with joyful sensuality and subversive force, reimagining Le Corbusier’s modernist masterpiece as a boat floating on the horizon – suspending, during this journey, norms and boundaries. Bright Hours features performances by Jeanne Balibar, Emara Neymour-Jackson, and Geramin Louvet, with an original score by Moses Sumney. Powered by Dropbox.

This public projection and talk is an opportunity to present the genesis of the project, to highlight the way it intervenes in the research of the artists, engaged in a critical rereading of the architectural and aesthetic icons of Modernity. It is also an opportunity to evoke the “avant-garde laboratory” that the Unité d’habitation in Marseille, which celebrates its 70th anniversary this year, has been since its creation in 1952.

American artists based in Paris, Gerard & Kelly have developed an artistic identity at the border of dance and contemporary art. Their multidisciplinary practice, between installation and performance, integrates video, writing, drawing and sculpture. Gerard & Kelly’s work has been presented internationally in art and architecture biennials, festivals and museums. Their work is included in the collections of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, the LACMA Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the FRAC Franche-Comté in Besançon, and the Carré d’art – Musée d’art contemporain de Nîmes. Gerard & Kelly are currently working on two exhibitions that will be presented at Carré d’art – Musée d’art contemporain de Nîmes and at the Marian Goodman Gallery (New York) in the fall of 2022. As part of New Worlds, they are also preparing their next film project to be shot at Eileen Gray’s Villa E-1027.
