In Situ – fabienne leclerc gallery focuses its presentation around artists intensely engaged in dialogue with both global and local cultures, by bringing together the works of the American artist Mark Dion, and the Iranian trio Ramin Haerizadeh, Rokni Haerizadeh & Hesam Rahmanian. Alongside these artists, this presentation will also be the opportunity to exhibit for the first time the work of a new artist who joined the gallery this year, Marina de Caro, which will have her first solo exhibition at the gallery in Spring 2023.
Plastic artist born in 1961, in Mar del Plata (Argentina), Marina De Caro lives and works in Buenos Aires (Argentina). Developing a multidisciplinary work integrating drawing, sculpture and performance, Marina De Caro experiments with the notions of space, body experience, intuition and emotion within a colorful universe. Her installations unfold within a poetic and sensitive space, often taking the form of flexible and mobile sculptures. Specially created to interact with the viewer/performer, these works invite the viewer to experiment with an unpredictable view of everyday life, behavior and bodily and social norms.
Mark Dion is born in 1961, New Bedford, Massachusetts and lives and works in Copake (USA). Known for his complex installations inspired by Wunderkammerns and scientific laboratories, Mark Dion is particularly interested in the relationship between Man and Nature through the construction of knowledge and scientific discourse since Antiquity. His projects often take on the appearance of a naturalist or archaeological expedition, sometimes involving the figure of the artist imitating the explorer, the biochemist, the detective or the archaeologist through his dress and gestures. By doing so, Mark Dion imitates but above all perverts the taste for classification: he borrows the methods, the attributes, the vocabulary, to better question knowledge and the process of its display.
With a collaborative artistic practice that includes painting, drawing, video and immersive installations, Ramin Haerizadeh (b. 1975, Tehran), Rokni Haerizadeh ((b. 1978, Tehran) and Hesam Rahmanian (b. 1980, Knoxville) propose a new definition of the collective in a constant state of movement and mutation, inviting friends and collaborators including carpenters, technicians, and thinkers to participate in their work. The artists act as operants within a collective organism, confronting issues such as power, otherness, displacement and destruction. Offering a meditation on the tension between high and low culture through their use of both traditionally artistic and banal materials, the artists ask us to reexamine forms, figures and issues absent from our field of vision. They work with total freedom of rhetorical and visual strategies, employing distortion, subversion, inversion and obscuration at will in order to question habitual judgments.
The appropriation of images by the artists doesn’t attempt to transmit a moral message but rather to communicate a new meaning to their public with their interventions.
