Spiaggia Libera, Paris
Marilou Poncin
Galerie Spiaggia Libera is pleased to present the work of French artist Marilou Poncin. The project was specially conceived for Art-o-rama 2024.
‘Sunburn and Moonlight’ is a multifaceted and immersive installation bringing together various practices of the artist; ceramics, painting, photography, and installation.
As a backdrop, a wallpaper featuring a photograph taken by the artist of the Marseille sky at dusk sets the scene for a story in progress. The aquatic and maritime universe present in her work resonates with the city of Marseille. A wrought iron table and bench inset on the sides contribute to inviting the public into this meeting space.
The female characters staged in Marilou Poncin’s universe are as many bodies emerging from the digital realm: camgirls, dolls, and avatars converge in her photographic paintings and ceramics.
Each of the fantastical worlds she explores unveils our individual and collective relationships to the societies in which we live, amidst tastes, desires, lacks, and prejudices.
→ Sunburn and moonlight
The sun burns her skin in the sultriness of summer. On this oiled membrane, water beads like tiny crystals. Enchanting hallucination, the light passing through the prism of water becomes multicolored. Seashells adorn themselves with delicious reflections like mirages on the surface of the evaporating water. Her flesh remains warm until nightfall when the sky wraps itself in purple. «It means it will be beautiful tomorrow,» my neighbor told me. When the moon appears between dog and wolf, his skin no longer burns but glows in the night.
