The book “Royal Book Lodge” by art historian John C. Welchman, published by Hatje Cantz, 2023, presents the first in-depth study of over 35 years of Royal Book Lodge’s collaborative activity. He examines the context of the various artistic practices of Royal Book Lodge having as its nerve center the artist’s book, as well as the building of an important archive of works and documents. In 13 chapters, the book explores the various cultural and political geographies of Royal Book Lodge, particularly in the Paris suburb of Montreuil, which served as the RBL’s headquarters from 1989, stories of migrations and journeys on the edge of time, whether influenced by art or not, in Iceland, Paraguay, Eastern Europe, Los Angeles or the Ligurian coast in Italy. It addresses issues related to the construction of fiction, autobiography; the relationship of Royal Book Lodge with certain protagonists of the Situationist International; notions of remote control, the archaeology of violence and the potential of art as a “first aid kit”.
