IMPORT EXPORT, Warsaw
Mia Dudek, Masha Silchenko
For Art-o-rama 2023, Import Export shows a dual presentation with works by Masha Silchenko (b. 1993, Odesa, UA) and Mia Dudek (b. 1989, Sosnowiec, PL). Spanning photography, painting, ceramic sculpture and sound, the booth will focus on juxtapositions between body, architecture and nature as well as notions of intimacy and domesticity in the artists’ work.
A graduate of ENSBA in Paris, Masha Silchenko also completed a year-long exchange at the Geidai Tokyo University of the Arts, where she practised in a traditional pottery studio. The unconventional training, together with the erudition in art, literature, music and systems of beliefs (animism), allowed Silchenko to develop her own language of expression related to love, loss and longing conveyed in ceramics, illustration, painting and media installations. Silchenko’s world is a constellation of magical objects and fantastic figures that blend the distinction between systems of nature, things and spirits: tissues are ghosts, ceramic bowls have eyes, vases have wings, flowers are lamps.
Silchenko’s works will be juxtaposed with a selection of photographs by Mia Dudek. A graduate of Royal College of Art in London and a PhD candidate at the Academy of Fine Arts in Lisbon, Dudek over the years developed an archive of images probing the relationship between the body and the architectural fabric. In her ongoing series skin studies, Dudek collects fragmentary portraits of the female body: skin folds, moles, veins et al. Shot from a close distance, Dudek’s photographs conjure a sense of fragility and intimacy, while also communicating a sense of alienation, displacement and claustrophobia of the bodies contained in a domestic space.
