Haena Yoo
Bibeau Krueger (New York) presents a solo installation by Seoul-based artist Haena Yoo. Their installation for Art-o-rama expands on Yoo’s most recent installation, The Oriental Sauce Factory (2022).
Yoo’s new installation created for Art-o-rama presents an organized material embodiment of societal structures through the framework of a factory model. The installation mines the methodology behind the concept of “wellness”, the promise of health as a capitalist vehicle, and the limitations of these rigid constructions as unsustainable formats with a core drive to hasten and restrict outcomes. Through the activation of this installation, Yoo suggests a visual oscillation between the state of interdependence and dependence while foreshadowing a collision of personal desire and control in a game of global scarcity. The installation ultimately introduces the outcome of predictability by way of scent, liquid, and fermentation.
Haena Yoo is a multidisciplinary artist who works between Seoul and Los Angeles. Yoo makes installations constructed with found materials, video, sound, and smell, exploring themes of labor, identity, and global capitalism. Through a tinkering process, she uses materials borrowed from different minority cultures, making operative systems that symbolize social interactions and power structures resulting from neo-globalization. Her work often shows the urgency created by limiting materials to what is at hand, showing the archeological and socio-political status of the maker.
