L’envers de l’endroit {itinéraires}
Frédérique Lagny, invited by Mécènes du Sud
Frédérique Lagny, who originally trained in painting at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, works in photography, film and installation. Since 2006, she has been undertaking a long-term project in West Africa, in Burkina Faso. She is interested in postcolonial political trajectories, citizen movements and forms of resistance that have shaped the country to this day. Society, the body, imaginaries and power relations in both France and Burkina Faso bear the lasting mark of French colonialism, whose expansion began in the late 19th century against the backdrop of the ‘scramble for Africa’ among European powers.
In 2016, Mécènes du Sud supported Ordre et désordre, the second part of the MANIFESTE trilogy, which takes the form of a series of ten silkscreen prints in the colours of Pan-Africanism, featuring the country’s monuments.
In 2026, at the invitation of Mécènes du Sud, she created textile works for Art-o-rama based on her research project L’envers de l’endroit {itinéraires}. In these works, she explores how history is constructed and leaves its mark, and, in doing so, invites us to reverse our perspective.
