Marijke Vasey, Andrés Barón
AU CENTRE COMME À LA MARGE
For Art-o-rama 2024, DS Galerie presents a duo show featuring Anglo-Belgian artist Marijke Vasey (born 1977, Belgium) and Colombian artist Andrés Barón (born 1986, Colombia). For both artists, time is suspended, time is out of time: a time of the bizarre, of displacement, of the ambient, of the atmospheric. Like that moment when brain activity intensifies to open up to the world of dreams. Where images lose meaning, where they chain and merge: a time of dreams or sleepwalking.
Andrés Barón relies on photography and film to investigate our ways of reading images today, to recontextualize them and subvert their codes and conventions. He navigates between different categories: portraits, still lifes, performative scenes, and abstractions, blurring the distinction between them, and creating incongruity in a literal and allegorical way.
Marijke Vasey, on the other hand, amalgamates images, references, as well as pictorial techniques and shifts them to the margins, surrounding these canvases. Posing in a bewildering way the question of the frame as a condition of the existence of painting. Here is a painting without a subject, a painting of emptiness, which probes our souls and invites us to cross over.
The painting of Marijke Vasey and the still or animated images of Andrés Barón meet by contrast at the center and at the margin in a proposal that deconstructs our relationship to the image, time, and space through a breaking of the boundaries of the booth.
