Tatjana Pieters, Ghent
Ben Edmunds, Anneke Eussen, Indrikis Gelzis, Matthijs Kimpe and Lucia Tallovà
Tatjana Pieters gallery proposes a dialogue between 4 artists who play with the traditional definitions of sculpture and painting.
The selected artists bring three dimensional objects to the wall, offering a deconstruction of images and objects in order to explore the relationship between the material and the immaterial.
Eussen meticulously assembles parts of discarded materials and objects into elegant compositions that supersede their functional origin. Often working with recycled glass, metal, marble & wood, she conserves the traces of time and only changes their appearance through a reordering of elements.
Drawing on his personal experiences of sailing, windsurfing, and cycling, Edmunds explores the parallels between abstract painting and adventure sports. He reflects on the conventions of painting by combining freely dyed canvases with perfectly executed seemingly ready made frames reminiscent of sports equipment.
Gelzis’ sculptures made out of steel, wood and textile, reflect a syntactically broken-up reality open for interpretation. Through it, the artist both materially consolidates and abstracts information into paintings and/or sculptures that appear to map some sort of data but flippantly refuse legibility.
The 3 dimensional paintings of Matthijs Kimpe reproduce digital images by analogue means by interweaving layers and depth. Using mesh, screens and spray paint as primary materials, he carefully composes his canvases creating a sense of movement to the still image.
