Andrès Pachòn CLASS(H)
“Class(h)” (2021) is a new work by Andrés Pachón, commissioned by Shazar Gallery, where the artist continues an ongoing research started in his previous project “Abstract Machine” (2020). In these works, Pachón proposes an experimental visualisation of the New York Public Library archive, possible through a ‘collaboration’ with the current technologies of Artificial Intelligence used for recognition, classification and generation of images. Through different devices and software, the audience will be able to ‘cross’ and interact with the black box of these technologies, with those processes that are usually obscured, at the same time that new relationships are established between the images and categories of this archive of visual documents produced between the 16th and 20th centuries.
In “Class(h)” the archive’s original images are never present; instead, we find images that have been generated by an artificial intelligence that ‘has learned’ to represent the latent features of the archive, focusing on visual characteristics that the ‘machine’ associates with the different categories. The interactive software and the photographic panels that compose “Class (h)” allow these images acquire an evocative character that enables the association of new ideas beyond pre-established codes.
