After your visit to the [mac] Musée d’art contemporain, we suggest a tour of the neighborhood and Malmousque, including Catherine Bastide’s La Traverse.
On this occasion, La Traverse presents Dryads of Cosquer, an exhibition presented as part of Lithuanian cultural season in France 2024. The exhibition features works by contemporary Baltic and international artists influenced by the legacy of Marija Gimbutas.
The American-Lithuanian researcher Marija Gimbutas (1921-1994) put forward the idea that a peaceful, nature-worshipping matriarchal society existed in the late Neolithic period in the Mediterranean region. This society, centered around a female goddess, was known for its advanced sign language, ceramics and extensive trade networks. Inspired by the cultural heritage of Gimbutas, this exhibition nods to the feminist myth of Marseille’s founder and establishes links with the Grotte Cosquer, highlighting the prehistoric drive for creativity and probing the essence of reality.
Curated by Merilin Talumaa and Justė Kostikovaitė.
