Sophia Kacimi

Sophia Kacimi, French-Moroccan creative, invites us to play in her colourful world : Zoubida. Rooted in Morocco her work bridges craftsmanship, fashion, interior design and art. In 2024, she won the Craft & Commitment Prize from Maison Mode Méditerranée

Acting like a laboratory of craft experimentations, Zoubida’s main focus is to bring new possibilities to traditional handwork in decline, by collaborating with local artisans.

The starting point of these “art-to-wear” and “art-to-use” creations are bold jacquard upholstery fabrics, the centerpieces of Moroccan homes.

Kacimi welcomes us around a timeless game, familiar to any generation and culture.

This installation was first exhibited at Somerest House during 1.54 Art Fair, then hosted at Tank Magazine for the full month of January and at the V&A museum at the occasion of the Friday Late Night.

Chess has been revisited by many artistic movements, including Art Nouveau, Surrealism, Fluxus or Pop Art. It is a game that often suggests hierarchy in society but is here asking us to look at the place of craft in our home.

This Zoubida giant-scale chess piece was created with artisans in Fes and Rabat. It took many talented hands to ring it to life and aims to invite even more hands to play with it.
