In Arabic, khamsin means fifty. It is also the name given to a scorching, dust-laden wind that blows from Egypt toward the countries of the eastern Mediterranean basin. For fifty days a year, it leaves behind a fine orange layer, blanketing the Arab world in a screen of sand the color of fire. The exhibition borrows its name as a metaphorical tool, reading it as an external force that comes to extinguish, blow apart, and swallow everything, burying the narratives, places, and histories of those it crosses.

Having become a curatorial compass in a space stripped of its bearings, the khamsin asserts itself in the exhibition as a new compass: one able to shed the spatial, economic, and political coordinates lent to the West, allowing for both poetic and plastic strategies to reassert buried narratives and rebuild interrupted transmissions.
